Trout Net

Another item that you absolutely will not want to be without is a trout net. Once hooked, trout are notorious for fighting until the bitter end, which sometimes results in the fish jumping off the line or finding a way to escape in the exchange from water to land or boat, however you are fishing.

Ideally, you want to reel the line in until the fish is within 5 or 6 feet of your body, keeping the line taut at all times.  When netting the fish, it is best to hold the pole with your non-throwing hand and then swiftly but deliberately scoop the net from behind/under the fish with your other hand. Be careful not to swipe at the fish if its too far out of your reach or if its still actively fighting against the current. It is easy to lose your balance if your legs aren’t stable or you make sudden swiping movements, which will most likely just cause you heartache and lost fish.

While trout nets are certainly necessary for your trip, there’s no reason to break the bank on top of the line netting equipment. Almost any net will work, so long as it has a short handle with a wide enough diameter and its material is not old or has the propensity for breaking.
