Fly-fishing waders are an integral part of every trout fisherman’s equipment for a variety of reasons, foremost of which is getting to the right location. In order to optimize your ability to catch the most fish, it is important that you are able to get to where the most fish reside. Sometimes merely fishing for trout off the banks of the river is adequate. But many times, the fish will be hanging out in pools in the middle of the current which may not always be accessible from the shore. Perhaps there are a group of big rocks that you can stand on in parts of the river to see exactly what is going on in the water below, if only you can get to them. Maybe there’s a fallen tree across the stream that is providing shade to a group of rainbow.

You want to be able to get close enough to tempt the fish with your bait without getting your line snagged or possibly interfering with someone else who was able to maneuver closer to the location that you are aiming for. It’s always easier to catch fish when you know where the fish are at. One of the ways to identify these hot spots is merely looking into the river (with some polarized glasses) to see where the most fish are swimming. Fly-fishing waders enable the fisherman to navigate in or around different types of terrain to find fish that they would not otherwise be able to get to without them.

Another reason fly-fishing waders are important is that they allow the fisherman to stay dry and warm. You can step comfortably into the water to get to your hot spot regardless of whether the temperature outside is 90 degrees or 40 degrees. Just like that, the addition of fly-fishing waders to your wardrobe may allow you to expand your trout fishing season by months. In addition to keeping you dry and warm, waders also provide traction. While it is always dangerous traversing slippery rocks in the middle of the river, most fly-fishing waders come with specialized boots that help improve stability in the water.

There are many different types of fly-fishing waders and you will want to select yours based on a variety of conditions. How deep is the river you are fishing? How fast is the current? How far are you willing to get in? You can find some that go up to just your knees, others that go up to the waist and some that provide protection all the way up to your chest.

I tend to be prepared to go as deep and as far as I need to find the fish, so for that reason, I prefer the full body waders. The most important thing is finding fly-fishing waders of high quality to prevent holes or leaks which can be prevalent in some of the cheaper models.

While fly-fishing waders provide a level of protection and added traction in the water, it is important to remember that your safety can never be taken for granted. Regardless of what type of equipment you are using, it is vital to be as cautious as possible when entering moving streams of any kind, regardless of whether or not you have fly-fishing waders on.
